SSC CGL Exam

SSC CGL Exam: Eligibility, Posts, Syllabus, Salary & Selection Process

SSC CGL Exam Preparation

The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) Examination is one of the major graduate-level recruitment examinations conducted for appointment to various Group ‘B’ and Group ‘C’ posts in Ministries, Departments, Offices, Constitutional Bodies, Statutory Bodies and Tribunals under the Government of India.

What makes SSC CGL different from many other competitive examinations is the range of careers available through a single recruitment process. Depending on the post and department, a selected candidate may work in taxation, audit and accounts, investigation, administration, statistics, customs, foreign trade, postal administration or other central government functions.

This guide explains SSC CGL as an examination and career route rather than focusing on a particular recruitment year. Wherever a rule, vacancy figure or examination structure is based on a recent notification, the relevant notification year is clearly mentioned.

The SSC CGL 2026 notification was issued under F. No. HQ-C11018/1/2026-C-1. The notification stated approximately 12,256 tentative vacancies at that stage. Vacancy figures can subsequently be revised by SSC and therefore should not be treated as a permanent feature of the examination.

What Is SSC CGL?

SSC CGL is a graduate-level recruitment examination through which the Staff Selection Commission selects candidates for different central government posts.

Unlike an examination that recruits for one specific designation, CGL provides access to several departments and job profiles. A candidate’s final post depends on factors such as:

  • Performance in the examination
  • Eligibility for the particular post
  • Post and department preferences
  • Category and available vacancies
  • Post-specific physical, medical or skill requirements

Therefore, SSC CGL should not be viewed simply as one job examination. It is better understood as a common recruitment gateway to multiple central government careers.

SSC CGL Job Profiles: What Do These Posts Actually Involve?

One of the most useful things an aspirant should understand before choosing preferences is the nature of work.

Assistant Section Officer

ASOs generally perform administrative and file-related work in central ministries and offices. Depending on the department, duties may include preparing notes, processing files, drafting correspondence, maintaining records and assisting officers in policy or administrative work.

The working environment can vary considerably between departments. An ASO in the Ministry of External Affairs, for example, may have a very different work environment from one working in a domestic administrative ministry.

Income Tax Inspector

An Income Tax Inspector works under CBDT. Depending on the assignment, duties may involve assessment-related work, verification, departmental enquiries, field visits, tax-related documentation and assistance in investigation or enforcement activities.

Central Excise Inspector

Working under CBIC, the role is connected with indirect taxation and customs-related administration. Depending on posting and assignment, the work may include verification, inspection, compliance-related activities and departmental procedures.

Preventive Officer

A Preventive Officer works under CBIC and may be involved in customs-related preventive functions, examination of goods, anti-smuggling work and related field or administrative duties.

Examiner

The Examiner post in CBIC is associated with customs examination and assessment functions, particularly relating to imported and exported goods.

Assistant Enforcement Officer

An AEO works under the Directorate of Enforcement and assists in enforcement-related activities under the laws administered by the department. The nature of work can include investigation-related assistance, documentation and field assignments.

CBI Sub-Inspector

A Sub-Inspector in the Central Bureau of Investigation performs investigation-related duties under senior officers. The work can involve case investigation, evidence-related procedures, field visits, documentation and coordination with other agencies.

Inspector Posts

An Inspector in the Department of Posts may supervise postal operations and administrative activities across subordinate offices and establishments.

Divisional Accountant

A Divisional Accountant works in offices under the C&AG and is associated with accounting, expenditure and financial control functions.

Auditor

Auditors examine financial records, expenditure and supporting documentation according to departmental responsibilities and applicable government rules.

Accountant/Junior Accountant

These posts involve maintaining accounts, processing financial records, preparing statements and supporting accounting operations.

Tax Assistant

Tax Assistants generally perform computer-based departmental work involving records, tax-related data, processing and administrative assistance. The exact nature of work depends on whether the candidate is posted under CBDT or CBIC.

Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant

These are operational and clerical positions in the Department of Posts. Work can involve customer-facing postal operations, records, booking, sorting and computer-based administrative tasks depending on the assignment.

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification

For most SSC CGL posts, the minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or equivalent qualification.

However, candidates should not assume that graduation in any discipline makes them eligible for every post.

Junior Statistical Officer

For JSO, the SSC CGL 2026 notification prescribed either:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with at least 60% marks in Mathematics at the Class 12 level, or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.

Statistical Investigator Grade-II

The 2026 notification prescribed a Bachelor’s Degree involving specified subjects such as:

  • Statistics
  • Mathematics
  • Economics
  • Demography
  • Population Studies
  • Operations Research
  • Information Technology
  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering
  • Computer Technology
  • Computer Application
  • Data Science
  • Artificial Intelligence

Candidates interested in these posts should check the exact qualification wording in the notification applicable to their recruitment cycle.

Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer

A Bachelor’s Degree is the essential qualification. The 2026 notification also listed desirable qualifications such as CA, CMA, CS, M.Com, Masters in Business Studies, MBA (Finance) and Masters in Business Economics.

Some specialized posts may also have language or other conditions.

Can Final-Year Students Apply?

Yes, subject to the applicable notification.

The SSC CGL 2026 notification permitted candidates who had appeared in the final year of graduation to apply, but they were required to possess the prescribed essential qualification by 1 August 2026.

This is an important distinction: merely appearing for a final examination does not necessarily mean that the candidate has acquired the qualification.

The result/qualification must satisfy the date specified in the notification.

Age Limit for SSC CGL

SSC CGL does not have one common maximum age for every post.

The age limit is post-specific.

Under the 2026 notification, the principal age bands were:

Age Band Date-of-Birth Requirement in 2026
18–27 years Born between 02 August 1999 and 01 August 2008
20–30 years Born between 02 August 1996 and 01 August 2006
18–30 years Born between 02 August 1996 and 01 August 2008
18–32 years Born between 02 August 1994 and 01 August 2008

The crucial date in the 2026 notification was 1 August 2026.

Therefore, aspirants should always check the age limit against the specific post they intend to select.

Age Relaxation

The 2026 notification provided the following principal upper-age relaxations:

Category Relaxation
SC/ST 5 years
OBC 3 years
PwBD 10 years
PwBD + OBC 13 years
PwBD + SC/ST 15 years
Ex-Servicemen 3 years after deduction of military service, subject to rules
Certain defence personnel 3 years
Certain defence personnel belonging to SC/ST 8 years

Additional relaxation provisions exist for eligible Central Government civilian employees and certain categories of widows/divorced/judicially separated women for applicable Group C posts.

These relaxations are subject to the conditions and documentation specified by SSC.

Nationality

Candidates should satisfy the nationality conditions prescribed in the SSC notification.

These generally cover:

  • Citizens of India
  • Subjects of Nepal
  • Subjects of Bhutan
  • Certain persons of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries

Candidates falling under categories other than Indian citizens may require an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

SSC CGL Selection Process

The examination is conducted in two tiers:

Tier-I

Computer-Based Examination

Computer Proficiency, DEST and Skill Requirements

Candidates should pay special attention to the fact that the computer and DEST components are not simply optional practice tests.

The 2026 notification made the Computer Knowledge Test mandatory but qualifying for all posts.

DEST is also qualifying, with standards depending on the post and candidate category. SSC may prescribe higher qualifying standards for posts where computer proficiency or data-entry ability is specifically required.

The notification specifically identifies posts such as certain ASO posts, CBIC inspector posts, Executive Assistant, Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant and other posts for higher computer/DEST standards.

Physical and Medical Requirements

Physical or medical requirements are particularly important because a candidate may qualify the written examination and still fail to qualify for a post having mandatory physical or medical standards.

The 2026 notification identified the following categories:

  • Inspector — Central Excise
  • Inspector — Examiner
  • Inspector — Preventive Officer
  • Inspector — Central Bureau of Narcotics
  • Sub-Inspector — Central Bureau of Narcotics
  • Sub-Inspector/Junior Intelligence Officer — Narcotics Control Bureau
  • Sub-Inspector — CBI
  • Sub-Inspector — NIA
  • Certain posts in Border Roads Organisation

Physical measurements, physical efficiency tests and medical requirements are specified in the relevant annexures of the notification.

For example, CBIC Inspector posts have prescribed physical standards and tests, while CBI and NIA Sub-Inspector posts have their own prescribed requirements.

Important: Candidates should read the applicable physical/medical annexure before putting such posts high in their preference list. SSC states that these tests are conducted by the concerned User Department after selection/nomination, and failure to meet mandatory requirements can affect appointment to the allotted post.

SSC CGL Salary

SSC CGL salaries are based on the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix.

The 2026 notification included pay levels from Level 4 to Level 8:

Pay Level Basic Pay Range Examples
Level 8 ₹47,600–₹1,51,100 Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer
Level 7 ₹44,900–₹1,42,400 ASO, Income Tax Inspector, CBIC Inspector, AEO, CBI SI
Level 6 ₹35,400–₹1,12,400 JSO, Divisional Accountant, NIA SI, Executive Assistant
Level 5 ₹29,200–₹92,300 Auditor, Accountant
Level 4 ₹25,500–₹81,100 Tax Assistant, Postal Assistant, UDC/SSA

These figures represent basic pay scales, not fixed monthly in-hand salaries.

Actual monthly earnings depend on factors such as:

  • Dearness Allowance
  • House Rent Allowance
  • Transport Allowance
  • Posting location
  • Applicable departmental allowances
  • NPS and other deductions

Therefore, an online claim such as “SSC CGL salary is exactly ₹X per month” should be treated cautiously.

How Final Selection Works

SSC CGL is not simply a matter of adding Tier-I and Tier-II marks.

The 2026 notification specifies that final merit is prepared using the applicable merit components of Tier-II.

For most posts, merit is based on the relevant marks in Sections I and II of Tier-II Paper-I, subject to qualifying the Computer Knowledge Test and DEST where applicable.

For JSO and Statistical Investigator Grade-II, Paper-II Statistics also contributes to merit.

For Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer, Paper-III Finance & Economics contributes to merit.

Therefore, aspirants should treat Tier-I primarily as the gateway to the next stage and prepare Tier-II with final merit in mind.

SSC CGL Preparation Strategy

A strong SSC CGL preparation plan should not begin with random mock tests. It should begin with understanding the examination structure.

Step 1: Build the fundamentals

Complete the basic concepts of:

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • English Grammar
  • Reasoning

Do not rush to advanced questions before the fundamentals are reliable.

Step 2: Study from the syllabus

Maintain a checklist of every topic. Mark topics as:

  • Not Started
  • Learning
  • Practising
  • Strong

This prevents candidates from repeatedly studying comfortable topics while ignoring weaker areas.

Step 3: Solve previous-year questions

Previous-year questions reveal:

  • Question style
  • Difficulty level
  • Repeated concepts
  • Common traps
  • Time requirements

They are especially useful for understanding the difference between knowing a concept and solving it under examination pressure.

Step 4: Introduce sectional tests

Do not immediately depend only on full-length mocks.

Use:

Concept → Topic Test → Sectional Test → Full Mock

This makes it easier to identify exactly where marks are being lost.

Step 5: Practise under sectional timing

The sectional timing in Tier-I and Tier-II makes time management particularly important.

A candidate may know enough mathematics to solve a question but still lose marks if too much time is spent on one section.

Step 6: Prepare General Awareness continuously

Divide GA into:

  • Static GK
  • History
  • Geography
  • Polity
  • Economy
  • Science
  • Current Affairs

Revision is more important than simply collecting large amounts of material.

Step 7: Start Tier-II preparation early

Waiting for the Tier-I result before beginning serious Tier-II preparation can create unnecessary pressure.

Tier-II requires greater depth, speed and accuracy.

Who Should Consider SSC CGL?

SSC CGL can be relevant for graduates who are interested in central government careers involving:

  • Administration
  • Taxation
  • Audit and accounts
  • Investigation
  • Customs
  • Statistics
  • Postal administration
  • Clerical/secretariat work
  • Regulatory and departmental functions

However, candidates should choose post preferences after examining job profile, department, age eligibility, physical requirements, computer/DEST requirements and career conditions, rather than looking only at the pay level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is graduation compulsory for SSC CGL?

For most posts, yes. The 2026 notification prescribed a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or equivalent. Certain posts have additional subject-specific qualifications.

Can final-year graduation students apply?

They may apply if they satisfy the qualification requirement by the date specified in the notification. For the 2026 cycle, the prescribed qualification date was 1 August 2026.

Is there one common age limit for SSC CGL?

No. The age limit varies by post. The principal bands in the 2026 notification were 18–27, 20–30, 18–30 and 18–32 years.

Is SSC CGL Tier-I qualifying?

Tier-I is used to shortlist candidates for Tier-II. Final selection is based on applicable Tier-II merit components.

Is there negative marking?

Yes. Tier-I carries 0.50-mark negative marking per wrong answer. Tier-II has different negative-marking provisions depending on the paper/section.

Is the Computer Test compulsory?

The Computer Knowledge Test in Tier-II Paper-I is mandatory but qualifying in nature, subject to the provisions of the applicable notification.

Is DEST compulsory?

DEST is part of Tier-II Paper-I and is qualifying for applicable candidates. SSC may prescribe higher standards for certain posts.

Are physical tests required for all SSC CGL posts?

No. Physical and medical requirements apply only to specified posts. These include certain CBIC inspector posts, CBN/NCB posts, CBI and NIA Sub-Inspector posts and certain BRO posts.

Can a candidate choose any SSC CGL post?

Candidates provide post and department preferences, but allocation depends on merit, preferences, vacancies and eligibility. Some posts also have specific physical, medical or skill requirements.

What is the highest pay level in SSC CGL?

In the 2026 notification, Pay Level 8 was the highest level, with a basic pay range of ₹47,600–₹1,51,100.

No. The examination includes both predominantly office-based posts and posts involving inspection, investigation, field duties, taxation, customs and enforcement-related responsibilities.

Is SSC CGL conducted every year?

SSC has conducted CGL recruitment on a recurring basis, but candidates should always rely on the latest SSC examination calendar and notification rather than assuming a fixed annual schedule.

Final Takeaway

SSC CGL is best understood as a multi-department graduate recruitment examination, not simply a single government job.

The most important decision for an aspirant is not merely whether to clear Tier-I. Candidates should understand the different posts before filling preferences and ask practical questions:

  • What type of work does the post involve?
  • What is the age limit for that particular post?
  • Does it have physical or medical standards?
  • Is computer proficiency or DEST required?
  • What qualification is required?
  • Which Tier-II paper contributes to final merit?
  • Which department and working environment suit my career plans?

This approach makes SSC CGL preparation more purposeful. Instead of preparing blindly for an examination, the candidate understands the career options available through it and prepares according to the actual selection structure.

Important: SSC notifications, vacancies, post lists, age limits, examination schedules and post-specific requirements can change. Candidates should always verify the latest notice issued by the Staff Selection Commission before applying or finalising post preferences.

Notification reference used for this guide: SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination, 2026, F. No. HQ-C11018/1/2026-C-1, dated 21 May 2026.
